Description

“Lorena”, written in 1856 about a lost love (whose real name was Ella), became hugely popular with both the Union troops and the Confederate troops during the American Civil war. It has been featured in several movies and documentaries, including: Ken Burns’ Civil War, Gone with the Wind, Lonesome Dove, Cowboys and Aliens, and numerous others. It is a sweet, sentimental tune and, at times, both the Union and Confederate military leaders banned it from being played at camp because they feared the sad, melancholy tone of the piece would inhibit the soldiers’ fighting spirit and cause desertions.
