Description
This hymn and tune is attributed to Elder Joseph Brackett of the Shaker community, but wasn’t known outside of the community until Aaron Copland incorporated it into his “Appalachian Spring.” Several Shaker manuscripts refer to the hymn as a dance piece and the parts of the text may be referring to dance steps. I did an arrangement of this hymn several years ago but I decided to add a minor portion to indicate that the dance of life is not always easy.
