Streets of Laredo

Chosen by the Western Writers of America as one of the top 100 cowboy songs, this ballad describes the story of a dying young cowboy who tells his story. Some people say that it is an adaptation of another traditional tune, ” The Unfortunate Rake,” and several people claim authorship of the words. But whatever its provenance, it is a well-loved cowboy tune and has been recorded by many prominent singers.
